History of San Diego De Alcala

The church was built by Franciscan Missionaries back in 1582 and was burned by Dutch invaders in 1665. The recovery was not that easy because the people of Gumaca have waited for almost 181 years to see the beloved cathedral reconstructed in 1886. But it`s bad misfortune does not end there for it was partially burned again in early 1900`s it was reconstructed and was severely damaged by a devastating earthquake back in 1937 leaving its upper most part destroyed. It was reconstructed in 1947 and was completed in 1999 with a choir loft added to its structure. It goes through a further development and renovation in 2002 before it became a beautiful cathedral as we observe today.

Spacious Interior and Grand Architecture

The cathedral is considered one of the biggest churches in the region, capable of seating almost 2,000 faithful Catholics. Despite its size, it is often filled during Sunday masses. Its long aisle resembles the elegance of Baroque churches, illuminated by sparkling chandeliers. The beautifully designed ceiling reflects the charm of Spanish cathedrals, creating a majestic and solemn atmosphere, especially during weddings and special occasions.

Sacred Decorations and Religious Symbolism

Inside the cathedral, visitors can admire its impressive architecture decorated with Catholic memorabilia, sculptures, and stained-glass windows. These stained glasses portray important biblical scenes that remind the faithful of the foundations of Catholicism and inspire deeper reflection on Christian teachings. Restoration Completed

After decades of gradual restoration, the bell tower and choir loft were fully rebuilt. This marked the community’s long-term commitment to preserving the cathedral’s history and function.

Earthquake Damage

A powerful earthquake struck and damaged parts of the cathedral, reminding the community of nature’s force and the fragility of even the strongest structures.

1846

Expansion for the Faithful

As the number of devotees grew, the church was expanded to accommodate more worshippers. It became a central place for major religious celebrations in the region.

Rebuilt in Strength

A more permanent and resilient structure was completed using coral stones and bricks. This marked the transformation from vulnerable chapels into a solid and imposing church.

Post-1665

Return to Gumaca

After the attack, the church was brought back to its original site in Gumaca. This decision showed the determination of both missionaries and locals to rebuild their spiritual home where it truly belonged.

Destruction by Fire

The church was burned by Dutch attackers, leaving the community without a place of worship. Despite the devastation, the people of Gumaca remained steadfast in their faith.

A Church in Motion

The original church, first established in Barangay San Diego Poblacion, was relocated to Alabat Island for security. This early move reflects the unstable conditions of the time, as communities sought protection from external threats.
